The works of conditioning include the reforestation, treatment of the sign and signaling that will also benefit to the pilgrims in their transit by the Way of Levante
The mayor has announced that next year a plan will be put in place to encourage the families of the Region of Murcia to visit Campos del Río by offering activities during the weekends around the Greenway
The mayor of Campos del Río, María José Pérez Cerón, together with the director general of the Institute of Tourism, Manuel Fernández-Delgado, visited this morning the work of conditioning and improving two new sections of the Northwest Greenway, Fields of the River, in which have been invested around 100,000 euros financed to 80 percent with European funds FEDER.
These improvements, which recover to a greater extent the original railway line, also have an impact on the Camino de Levante, since the itinerary coincides with the pilgrimage route.
In the first section, located before arriving at the urban center of Campos del Rio, a new route of about 900 meters has been realized, managing to reduce by more than 850 meters the alternative indicated above.
The second section, about 800 meters, runs between the old railway station and the current lodge to the exit of the hull, having enabled a 250-meter bike path along the RM-531 road to Albudeite.
The works have included the treatment of the firm with stabilized soil, improvements of drainage, placing of rails and elements of protection, tree plantation and the installation of directional and preventive signaling;
And with them the traffic for trekkers and cyclists and for pilgrims on the Camino de Levante towards the holy city of Caravaca de la Cruz for the Jubilee Year of 2017 has been greatly improved.
The mayor emphasized that this "is a necessary and very important action for the municipality since with it we get added value to our tourist attractions."
Perez Cerón said this morning that 2 km of the road have been repaired as it passes through the municipality and improvements will continue to be made.
"Although the Jubilee year will conclude at the beginning of next January, we will continue to maintain this infrastructure in perfect conditions" and announced that "next year will be invested in implementing a plan to revitalize the families of the Region of Murcia Visit Campos del Rio by offering them activities during the weekends around our Green Way. "
For its part, the director general of the Institute of Tourism, Manuel Fernández - Delgado, thanked the mayor for his involvement with the project, collaborating companies and especially thanked the neighbors of the municipality who have ceded part of these tracts so that Today we can enjoy the current stretch of this road ..
Greenways in the Region
The greenways are old disused railway stretches, which have been transformed into roads and ecological routes at the service of walkers and cyclists.
Thanks to the accessibility, ease and safety of the routes are especially attractive for children, elderly or people with disabilities.
The Northwest Greenway was launched more than a decade ago and since then has been managed and conditioned by the Tourist Consortium made up of the Ministry of Tourism and the town councils of the route.
The route, which runs along 78 kilometers between Murcia and Caravaca de la Cruz, offers varied landscapes, arid and fertile, almond and pine groves and monumental villages.
Along the itinerary are different rest areas and a network of hostels, with accommodation, catering and tourist activities.
The Green Way of the Northwest allows to enjoy in a respectful way a privileged environment and full of history.
