The Bishop of Cartagena, Mons. José Manuel Lorca Planes, presided, yesterday, the Eucharist at the Murcia II Penitentiary Center, in Campos del Río, on the occasion of the feast of Our Lady of Mercy, patron saint of inmates and institutions penitentiaries
Mons. Lorca thanked the prisoners who had prayed for him since he last visited the center, reminded them that they should not feel alone because with them "there is always God and the Virgin Mary" and urged them to have "courage to ask for forgiveness and courage to follow Jesus Christ from the heart â€.
Finally, the Bishop of Cartagena recognized the work of the volunteers of the Prison Ministry and asked God for them and, especially, for the Missionaries of Charity and its founder, Saint Teresa of Calcutta.
During the homily, the prisoners interrupted with applause, up to nine times, the Bishop's words.
“It was very emotional to see how the message of Don José Manuel reached them deeply and moved them,†explains Antonio Sánchez, chaplain of the center and pastor of the Holy Spirit of Espinardo (Murcia).
In addition, one of the prisoners wanted to thank the Bishop, during the thanksgiving, that he would have brought them “faith, patience and hope, so necessary in places of desolation, pain and sadnessâ€.
The celebration involved 145 prisoners from all modules, jail chaplains, several area vicars, volunteers from the Penitentiary Ministry and the prison's own choir.
After Mass, the prisoners received a rosary as a souvenir.
“This detail made them very excited and most of the prisoners asked the Bishop to bless him,†says Antonio Sánchez.
With the celebration of the Eucharist, the activities surrounding the feast of the Virgin of Mercy, which, during the last two weeks, have been carried out in the penitentiary center, end.
