The Templar Association of Jumilla (Murcia) that jointly with the Cultural Association Jumillana (Barcelona - Poble Sec) since May 2017 are developing, under the direction of the Subdirectorate of Treatment, the Project Guardians of Seeds in the garden of the penitentiary of Campos del Río, without any type of subsidy or public support, to enrich the poverty of the land that ruined the crops of last year, product of micro-patronage and the contributions of its members and supporters, have acquired ten tons of good farmland that add to the twenty tons that the Administration of the center have already contributed to this therapeutic project developed by inmates in the Educational Treatment Unit (UTE) affected by states of drug addiction.
The plot, of six hundred square meters, has been planted with native Murcian varieties, some protected and in danger of extinction, such as tomatoes of different varieties, melons, watermelons, onions, peppers, flowers, aromatic and medicinal herbs, fruit trees of dwarf growth , all to encourage pollination and scrupulous respect for the environment using non-polluting and contaminated organic materials and waste generated by the penitentiary itself, using recycled water as irrigation, and irrigation by condensation, recycling bottles and plastic cups from everyday use.
The project follows the guidelines of the General Secretariat of Penitentiary Institutions regarding the use of own waste generated by the penitentiary establishments in defense of the Environment and fight against global warming.
Not only do inmates participate in the UTE, whose current census is estimated at 85 inmates, but the commissars of the sixteen modules, maintenance, gardeners, draughtsmen and painters collaborate in the project contributing, according to destinations, coffee grounds as fertilizer, pallet wood in waste for the construction of terraces, peels and vegetable waste for the composter, while the draftsmen and painters design the graphics that identify the 16 terraces of the plot.
